About me

On the Southern Star, Great Yarmouth, Feb 2013 resize 1Originally from the West Midlands, I’ve worked and volunteered all over the country for various conservation NGO’s, including spells for the RSPB in Lincolnshire and Shetland, at Fair Isle Bird Observatory and in Devon for the Barn Owl Trust. Now a freelance ecologist and tour guide, I spend most of my free time birding the slightly more out of the way spots around Britain. For my sins, i serve on the British Birds Rarities Committee and the Lincolnshire Birds Rarities Committee.

  1. Hi Paul,
Enjoyed the Armenia write up, very envious. I need to visit the Caucasus some time soon. Wader build up has started on the Wash, are you around in the next 2 months or away with Sunbird ?
Circumstances are allowing me to leave full time NHS employment on 300913, can’t be bad !

    • Hi Phil
Sounds like you’re going to enjoy early retirement, if thats what it is?! I can thoroughly recommend the Caucasus, its an amazing birding location. I’m going back to Georgia at the end of Aug to volunteer for the Batumi raptor camp, so watch this space for a write up on that. Not sure i’ll be able to get back to Lincs this autumn at all, just too busy travelling and working! Still, can’t complain.

  2. I am Durrell’s manager for the project Saving The Madagascar Pochard, a partnership between Durrell, Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust, The Peregrine Fund, Asity Madagascar and the Madagascar Government. I have been working with wildfowl in Madagascar for many years and produce internal monthly reports on the pochard project for everyone involved in the work both inside and outside Madagascar. I recently saw your fantastic photographs of the pochard from Bemanevika and would be very grateful for your permission to use these photographs in the reports. The reports are only available to project members and supporters and are not publicly distributed. You will be fully acknowledged at all times (including your website) and the photos will never be used commercially. If requested for other project material such as fundraising flyers etc. I will contact you for permission.

    Many thanks in advance.

    Very best wishes,

    Glyn Young

    • Hi Glyn
Sorry for the delay in replying, I’ve been away for a few weeks. I would be very happy for you to use my Madagascar Pochard pictures. If you send me your email address I’ll send you higher res images. If you want any other pics from Madagascar, just let me know.
      Best wishes,
      Paul French

    • Hi Mike

I haven’t written any more about the Philippines trip yet, not had the time. Hopefully get it done in the next few months! Happy to help if i can though.

  5. Hi Paul, Read your Madagascar trip report with great interest. Would I be able to contact you via email for some advice ? Regards, Rose Lee

  6. Hi, Paul. I got your name from the Wings/Sunbird Israel tour info., and then I found this site. My wife and I will be in Israel this coming mid-November. We won’t be birding full-time but, from what I’ve just read, it would be nice to spend a couple of days in the Hula Valley and hire a guide for a couple of outings. Could you recommend anyone over there?
